Speedboat on fire

Speedboat on fire

Saturday 4th August 2018

We launched the West Mersea Lifeboat, Just George, at 2.30pm today to a 5m speedboat on fire off Osea Leisure Park at Mill Beach. The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance, as were the West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team.

Under strict instructions not to approach due to fuel and flares onboard, we were there purely in a support boat capacity and to keep other vessels away. The firefighters attached a line to the casualty vessel. We then helped them haul the burning hull inshore and nearer the slipway so they could deal with the inferno more easily.

The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service put the fire out from the shore whilst we kept the area clear. Photo is a screengrab from our headcam footage showing the burning boat and one of our West Mersea RNLI volunteer crewmembers throwing the towline back to the fire brigade.
